Abstract
As the number of Interactive Virtual Environments
over the Internet for gaming or training purposes has increased
dramatically in recent years, there has been the need for making
these environments appear more natural and real. Avatar
locomotion is an important contributor to improving the realism
of interactive 3D virtual environments. This paper presents a
novel collision detection and avoidance algorithm that prevents
avatars from colliding with each other or obstacles in their bath
while moving in a linear as well as in a curvilinear motion with
changing velocities.
