Title MOEAs: Applications in Bioinformatics and Data Mining
Speaker Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay

Abstract
Evolutionary algorithm has emerged as one of the most popular search and optimization techniques for solving real-life, complex problems. Many of these problems require the simultaneous optimization of multiple, often conflicting, objectives, leading to the development of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). MOEAs are being widely used in many domains including bioinformatics and data mining.

Over the past few decades, major advances in the field of molecular biology, coupled with advances in genomic technologies, have led to an explosive growth in the biological information generated by the scientific community. Mining new and interesting patterns from huge amounts of data is a fundamental requirement of all data mining systems, whether in biology, finance, remote sensing, geosciences, mobile communication, etc. Many problems in analyzing such large and complex data sets require the optimization of one or more objectives, making the application of MOEAs very relevant.

In this talk, we will first provide introductory discussions on MOEAs, bioinformatics and data mining, along with the challenges posed in these domains. Thereafter, several applications of MOEA in these two domains will be mentioned. Finally, two focused applications will be described, viz., MOEA for clustering and MOEA in rational drug design. The talk will conclude with a mention of some areas of current research in MOEAs.
